Marcus Samuelsson Opened A New Restaurant In Miami’s Overtown

Located in the heart of Overtown, Red Rooster serves comfort food celebrating the roots of American cuisine and the diverse culinary traditions of the neighborhood. At Red Rooster we want to share the story of Overtown with our guests, and offer a platform to celebrate local artists, musicians and culinary talents. We embrace today’s Overtown with a spirit of inclusiveness and community by hiring our family of staff from within the community; inspiring better eating through buying from local purveyors.

Red Rooster Overtown was originally supposed to open last March but was delayed due to the pandemic. However, when it was nearly complete, the team decided to team up with José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and Food Rescue US to offer meals to anyone in need rather than rushing to open. They created meals for those affected by the pandemic three days a week from the restaurant.

The space finally debuted as Red Rooster Overtown this past December. Samuelsson set out to not only bring his signature Harlem dishes to Miami, but to also incorporate the flavors of the Overtown neighborhood. You’ll see his famous hot honey fried chicken and the quintessential “Obama short ribs” on the menu, but you will also find additions like ceviche, grilled fish, and conch fritters inspired by the Latin and Caribbean flavors of Miami.

Historic Location in Overtown, Miami

Whether you are looking for a casual outdoor dining experience with friends or an intimate date night in the dining room, Red Rooster aims to please. The restaurant is housed in the former “Clyde Killen’s Pool Hall” in the historic Overtown neighborhood. In the 1960s this was a popular nightlife venue. Today, Samuelsson’s Red Rooster features a main dining room, outdoor covered patio, balcony terrace, and several private dining rooms. The ambiance is cool and casual, with lots of trendy artwork by Derrick Adams and Mickalene Thomas throughout the space. Following the pool hall’s musical history, the team will be bringing in entertainment and live DJs almost every day. Wednesdays feature Soul & Afro Beats, Thursdays are filled with Classics & B-Sides, Friday night is all about Hip Hop, Rare Grooves & Remixes and weekend brunches are either Funky Dance Gems or Gospel. Check the Red Rooster website for more details.

Marcus Samuelsson’s Classics

Come hungry as the portions are certainly generous, especially if you go for the Fried Yard Bird, i.e. hot honey fried chicken with a few sides. Try a few of their refreshing cocktails, which feature lots of Miami flavors and spirits, such as the Maison 920, made with pear infused e11even vodka, champagne cordial, orgeat syrup, and soda. But also, be sure to save room for dessert because the “Old Fashion Good Time,” a dark chocolate pretzel tart, with bourbon-citrus caramel, kumquats, and malt chocolate ice cream is too good to pass up!
